Stock Market Game Winners!

This week, eight seventh graders, accompanied by Mr. Goldberg and Mrs. Brueckheimer, went to the Stock Market Game Ceremony at the William Paterson College. These eight seventh graders were two teams of students that came in first and third place in the stock market game.

There were 321 teams and 52 schools in the Grades 6-8 competition. The game lasts for 10 weeks. All teams start with an initial $100,000 and buy and sell stocks at actual prices on all the exchanges. Commission costs as well as dividends and margin interest are all factored into each teams portfolio. Finishing in third place was the seventh grade team of captain Talia Bardash and her teamates Ora Rogovin, Ben Elias, Max Gruber, and Avidan Krasna. They ended the competition with $107,152. Stocks they bought or short sold included Ford, Delta, Bank of America and Navious Maritime. The first place winning team was also from the seventh grade. They included captain Sarah Baruch and her teammates Jessie Levart, Kayla Blumenfeld, and Eliana Schwartz. The ended with $113,672. Stocks in their portfolio included Rio Tinto Mining Co. as well as Google, Apple, and the Simon Property Group.

In the beginning of the ceremony the students were taken up to a room and were asked questions about their experience of the game. After that they were brought downstairs and shown the room where many investors in the financial world meet. The tour guide then explained that every single meeting was recorded by voice and video. The students were then split into two groups and half were brought into the control room. These students could hear what their friends were saying in the other room. Afterwards, the students were brought into the auditorium and gave a speech about their experience of the game. All the students were given awards for their achievements and hard work. The students had a great time throughout the game and the ceremony.
