The fourth day of Chanukah brought a brand new event to our celebrations - Iron Chef, Yavneh Style! For the past week, our students have been buying raffle tickets (with the proceeds benefitting the student council) for the chance to be one of five students who would partner with a teacher to prepare and serve a sugfaniya from scratch.
Just before lunch today, our five winners were announced, and so it was that Yael Ledner, Orly Davis, Sam Rochlin, Justin Hod, and Yael Berger teamed up with Mrs. Frankel, Rabbi Frankel, Rabbi Ross, Rabi Srolovitz, and Morah Kraut in this culinary adventure. Each team was given a set of kitchen tools and a wide array of ingredients, fillings, and toppings, and set to work. With no recipies allowed (and apparently no previous experience making sufganiyot), our teams mixed, tasted, decorated, filled, and ultimately deep-fried their concoctions. All of the delectable creations were then presented to our student council officers for judging. Seeing as all judges survived the tasting, we would have to conclude that everyone went home a winner.
